McCain Foods has officially begun the construction on a project to invest over GBP100m into its Scarborough production facility, in a ground-breaking ceremony at the Eastfield site, UK.

Following Scarborough Borough Council’s formal recommendation of approval for McCain Foods’ plan to renew the Scarborough production facility in July 2017, Councillor Derek Bastiman, Leader of the Council and Jim Dillon, Chief Executive of Scarborough Borough Council, joined senior leaders of McCain GB and the McCain project team to mark the milestone, according to the local press.

Established in Eastfield almost 50 years ago, the McCain Foods Scarborough facility is one of the Company’s most successful sites.

Regional CEO for McCain GB & Ireland, Nick Vermont, said: “We are delighted to be officially cutting ground and commencing our renewal plans for the Scarborough site. The investment we are making to renew the facility will secure the continued, long-term success of our site here in Eastfield for generations to come, allowing us to meet the increased demand for our products. As well as upgrading equipment, we will also be delivering broader environmental benefits, such as installing state-of-the-art odor reduction technology.”

In January, Mccain Foods has informed its employees of proposed closing of the dry and cold store operations at its Scarborough facility.

Bill Bartlett, corporate affairs director for McCain Foods, then said: “In order to ensure the long-term sustainability of the overall facilities at Scarborough, and following a review of both cold and dry store requirements on site, the company proposes, subject to consultation, to close the Scarborough stores in their current format over the coming months and outsource its requirements to third party expertise.”
