Reports made by research companies show the increase of the global market for processed potato products. Although the increase is not high, it has been a steady one in the past three years. Today, PotatoBusiness.com analyzed two reports regarding the potato chips market and frozen finger potato chips.

The global potato chips market will grow at a CAGR of 4.58% during the period 2017-2021, according to the "Global Potato Chips Market 2017-2021" report recently launched by Research and Markets.

The latest trend gaining momentum in the market is the innovative product offerings. Manufacturers of potato chips are tapping on the heavy demand for health foods by offering chips made from healthy ingredients. They, often, promote their products with health claims. The demand for functional and non-GMO ingredients is high due to the rising cases of obesity, diabetes, gluten allergy, and other maladies.

According to the report, one of the major drivers for this market is the changing taste preferences. New flavors of potato chips are also introduced by manufacturers so as to expand the consumer base. The major flavors in which potato chips are offered around the world are roasted/toasted, barbeque, spice, and beef. The flavor is an important component of potato chips as major industry players try to differentiate on this basis. Barbeque is the predominant flavor in North America and European regions and the demand for it is slowly picking up in Asia Pacific. It is expected to grow moderately over the forecast period.

The report mentions as key potato chips vendors companies as Calbee, Intersnack Group, Kellogg and PepsiCo, but also Arca Continental, Burts Potato Chips, Haldiram Foods International, Hain Celestial Group, Herr Foods, ITC, Old Dutch Foods and The Lorenz Bahlsen Snack-World.

Finger Chips on Demand

On the other hand, the frozen finger chips market is driven by increasing popularity of western style cuisine, change in lifestyle, and increase in urbanization.

Finger chips are some of the most readily available foods prepared by either frying or baking, according to a report published by Allied Market Research. Frozen finger chips are available in various shapes, sizes, and flavors.
Most producers offer certified organic and sweet potato varieties, which are popular trends on the market. Among the advantages of this type of product there are convenience, ease of storage, and long shelf life.
Moreover, these help with portion control, because after using the required size portion the remaining content can be stored in frozen state. Currently, frozen finger chips have replaced freshly cut potatoes, as they are convenient and offer consistent quality and taste.

The frozen finger chips market is driven by increasing popularity of western style cuisine. The growing popularity of fast food chains is expected to provide substantial growth opportunity in the near future. However, the fact that most of the frozen fingers producers use trans fats and palm, which affect heart health, could hamper the consumption of frozen finger chips.

The major market players of the market are considered McCain Foods Limited, Simplot Foods, Alexia foods, Lamb Weston Holdings, Farm Frites, Aviko, Agrarfrost GmbH & Co. KG, Agristo, American Lorain Company, and Balle Bros Group Ltd, according to the report.
