Fiji Potato Trials Success PDF Print E-mail
Potato trials conducted in Fiji at Nadrala and the Sigatoka Research Station have shown promising results.

Fiji imported approximately $20 million worth of potatoes last year. The Red Rascal variety has been identified as the most suited to growing conditions in Fiji and officials are expecting a good yield.

The Red Rascal variety has red skin and an oval shaped tuber and can yield up to 25 tonne per hectare.

The two sites are currently being used as post-entry quarantine stations and are used to trial the performance of the potato.

Research Officer Kalo Colaitiniyara said the potatoes are growing well and regular inspection by officials have shown no ill- effects.

Minister for Agriculture and Primary Industries Joketani Cokanasiga says the Government intends to make Nadarivatu a one stop shop for buyers.

Cokanasiga says Nadarivatu has the potential to supply to hotels, and current production will have to be surpassed if this is to happen.
