Following the Malda village protests, district administrators demanded the agricultural marketing department to buy the potatoes at Rs 3.50 per kg.
More than 100 farmers from Jairampur village in the Harishchandrapur district took to the streets after excessive production and low customer levels resulted in the purchase price dropping to Re 1 per kg.
District magistrate Sridhar Ghosh said: "We have instructed the agricultural marketing department to buy potato from farmers. We do not have any idea why the growers in Harishchandrapur reacted in such a manner."
The protests come after a 19-year-old farmer committed suicide by ingesting pesticide claimed to be as a consequence of incurring mounting debts.
