Spanish potato campaign gets off to a bad start PDF Print E-mail
The 2012-2013 Spanish potato campaign is presented with notable concern for growers in Castile and Leon, with a great part of the previous crop still unsold and prices increasingly dilapidated, as has been reported by the United Farm Workers (UCCL).

This organization has explained in a statement that the 2011-2012 campaign, which has not yet finished, has been, "truly ruinous for farmers, who still maintain thousands of kilos in their stores", reported Salamanca24horas.

It has been said the forecast is really dark and complicated for this production, due to low values ​​with which at retail.

The food distribution chains maintain prices that barely go above 40 cents per kilo in consumer sales, "as opposed to the 5-6 received by growers," according to UCCL.

This organization has complained to the Ministry of Agriculture so they might "make every effort to try to get the contracts for fresh potatoes to become more widespread as much as possible, as a way of trying to avoid generalized price shocks experienced last season."
