Tolsma-Grisnich Storage Technology, which developed a unique sensor to measure the temperature at different locations and heights within a bulk potato storage facility, has been nominated for a PotatoEurope 2017 Innovation Award.

The product, which is a 5 meter long cable, measures temperature differences quite accurately at different locations, and the developers consider that the device provides storage managers with more fine-tuned control over temperature regulation in a storage facility. During filling of the storage, the 5m sensor can be brought into the natural slope of the product, which will not obstruct the filling process.

By using improved measurements and anticipating the settings in the Vision Control climate computer on these data, a better product quality will be achieved, which in the end will result in the highest possible storage efficiency.

Some of the advantages of this innovation include the measurement of temperature differences throughout the height in bulk storage, the fact that the product can be entered during filling process of the storage, prevention of condensation in the upper layer, as well as an optimized internal ventilation time in order to equalize temperatures.

PotatoBusiness has contacted the Marketing Manager of Tolsma, Jan van Maldegem, who explained that the sensor cable contains 5 NTC thermistors. “These thermistors are the same as in our other temperature sensors. NTC thermistors are resistors with a negative temperature coefficient, which means that the resistance decreases with increasing temperature,” van Maldegem says.

Tolsma’s representative says that the nomination at PotatoEurope 2017 Innovation Award means that storage technology is still improving.

“We are happy with the nomination. But more importantly, […] this means storage technology is still improving and not in a status quo phase. The biggest advantage is that our customers get new tools to maintain (improve) the quality of their products in storage, and on the other hand, reduce energy costs,” van Maldegem continues.

He adds that Tolsma-Grisnich’s business premises will be bustling with activity during the Potato Europe event on September 13-14. The company will present 10 novelties, which will be announced on August 29.
