AI Processor Improves Newtec’s Optical Sorting Machine for Potatoes

Qtechnology (qtec), a worldwide end-to-end creator of tailored industrial cameras and turnkey machine vision systems, revealed recently that Hailo-8 will now power its top modular AMD Ryzen embedded V1605B APU-based camera platform running GNU/Linux.
Customers are already using the improved qtec camera series, most notably Newtec Engineering A/S, which reported a 400% increase in the number of pixels processed, a reduction in power consumption, and faster AI model development and deployment using well-established libraries like Tensorflow and Pytorch.
Artificial intelligence-powered production processes are critical to the smart factory of the future; without them, producers face bottlenecks and high running costs when creating, managing, and sorting products.
To meet these difficulties, qtec is now incorporating the Hailo-8 into their industrial-embedded cameras, greatly increasing their performance. The Hailo-8 guarantees quick and efficient AI processing in real-time while consuming little energy thanks to its simple integration via the PCIe link, an intuitive software development kit (SDK), and available Yocto recipes. The Hailo-8 performs high-resolution image inference, freeing up the available CPUs and GPUs in the qtec cameras to prioritize other duties.
“Hailo’s AI chip is designed to perform a large number of parallel operations. This enables our embedded cameras to efficiently incorporate neural networks into demanding industrial processing pipelines. Dedicated components such as the Hailo-8 help us optimize how valuable resources are allocated, which ultimately allows us to perform more sophisticated analysis for our customers,” Aleksandar Topic qtec Software Engineer said.
Newtec Engineering A/S manufactures optical sorting devices for farm goods using qtec’s embedded cameras. With the inclusion of Hailo’s AI chip, Newtec can now execute bigger AI models in real time, resulting in better customer performance. Furthermore, the Hailo-8’s low power usage assists makers in better managing the difficult thermal conditions that machines frequently encounter in harsh climes.
“qtec is empowering industries by providing them with powerful machine vision systems used in industrial applications to solve real-world problems in a large variety of industries worldwide. With the Hailo-8, these systems will be even more powerful, ushering in a new era of smart factories powered by AI at the edge,” Orr Danon, CEO and Co-Founder of Hailo concluded.
