Canada Heads for Record Potato Crop Despite Regional Rain Disruption

Canada’s potato production is forecast to reach a record 130.6 million hundredweight (cwt) in 2026, up 3.7% from 2025, according to North American Potato Market News.
The forecast, published in the Michigan Potato Industry Commission’s September 23 market report, puts production 4.7 million cwt above last year. Average yield is projected at 336 cwt per acre, compared with 320 in 2025 and the previous record of 332 in 2023.
Conditions remain uneven. Rain supported late-season bulking in New Brunswick, Quebec and Ontario, while excessive rainfall affected Prince Edward Island and the Prairie Provinces. Wet fields had brought Alberta’s harvest to a standstill the previous week.
Chip potato supplies are expected to increase in Ontario and Quebec. Combined potato production across the two provinces could rise 6.2%, although the report does not provide a breakdown by end use. Maritime chip potato production is expected to meet local requirements.
The figures remain forecasts, with the harvest still under way when the report was published.
