Greece: Cedroz Bionematicide Has Received Temporary Approval for Use on Potatoes
One of the world innovators in sustainable biopesticide and biocontrol technology, Eden Research PLC, recently revealed that Cedroz has received temporary approval in Greece for use on potatoes against wireworms for the 2024 growing season, as per Reg. EU/1107/2009.
Cedroz will now be allowed to be used on potatoes against wireworms. Eastman Chemical, Eden’s commercial partner in several countries, is Cedroz’s distributor in Greece.
The larvae of click beetles, known as wireworms, inflict damage on potatoes by creating a dense network of holes and miniature tunnels on the produce. Farmers have few choices (mostly dependent on synthetic insecticides) to reduce this pest’s detrimental effects on the harvest, even though it is growing more problematic in many crops and places.
Beyond its combined use as a post-planting nematicide in horticulture crops, Cedroz has a substantial commercial potential given the 5,000–6,000 hectares of potato fields in Greece alone that are infested with wireworms.
“The granting of this temporary approval indicates that there are no other commercially available, viable alternatives to Cedroz for this particular use. We have seen in previous trials, and even under a previously granted temporary approval in Italy on wireworms, that the product works well and, as such, we are confident that there is a strong business case for this use,” Sean Smith, Chief Executive Officer of Eden Research, commented.
The sole UK-listed business specializing in biopesticides for sustainable agriculture is Eden Research. It creates and distributes cutting-edge biopesticide products and natural micro-encapsulation technology to the consumer products, agricultural protection, and animal health sectors worldwide.
The company bases the composition of its terpene-active chemicals on naturally occurring plant defense metabolites. When compared to traditional pesticides, they function equally well or better on high-value fruits and vegetables, increasing crop yields and marketability.
Cedroz is a bionematicide that suppresses nematodes, a form of parasitic worms that infest several valuable fruit and vegetable crops worldwide during their free-living stage. Two continents have registered Cedroz for sale.
