Belgian frozen potato products manufacturer Agristo has officially marked the next phase of construction of its first North American production facility with a groundbreaking ceremony in Grand Forks, North Dakota, bringing together company executives, government representatives, growers, contractors and community partners. The event marks a symbolic milestone for a project that has been under construction since September 2025.

The Grand Forks facility represents Agristo’s first manufacturing investment in the United States and forms part of the company’s wider international expansion strategy. Once operational, the plant will produce frozen potato products, including French fries, hash browns and other potato specialties for the U.S. market and export destinations.

“Throughout this past winter, we’ve continued to make strong progress despite harsh weather conditions,” said Ruben Devos, Agristo Grand Forks Project Director. “With the arrival of spring and early summer, we were able to smoothly resume construction and accelerate all related activities. The established foundation is now ready for the remaining construction milestones and represents not just a physical foundation, but a reflection of the strong work ethic demonstrated by our partners and everyone who has contributed to this project so far.”

Although the groundbreaking was held this month, site development began in September 2025. Construction crews have already completed major foundation work, including the installation of piles supporting the future buildings, with the project now moving into its next construction phase.

The facility is expected to process approximately 275,000 tonnes of potatoes annually once fully operational. Agristo estimates the plant will create 300 to 350 permanent jobs and source potatoes from around 20,000 acres of cropland supplied by approximately 50 growers in the Red River Valley.

The production start date has been revised from the original 2028 target to fall 2029, following a decision to extend construction by one additional season. According to the Grand Forks Region Economic Development Corporation, the longer timeline will allow both Agristo and the city to complete the project and supporting infrastructure without accelerating construction. The overall investment is also expected to exceed the original estimate of US$450 million, although the company has not disclosed an updated project value.
