Snack producer Burts Chips has invested GBP 2.1 million to develop and expand its UK factory, aiming to double its production capacity and extend product shelf life.

New equipment has been installed, including two fryers, which alone have increased capacity by 25 per cent, local press reports. The new facilities now in use at the factory include also a bagger, auto-case packing for two lines, new optical sorting and an improved weighing check, as well as a crisp distribution conveyor.

The high-speed fryers will allow Burts to launch new products soon, including an addition to the chips range, which has already been announced.

Longer Shelf Life

Through the installation of enhanced gas flushing technology, the Plymouth based company has been able to extend the shelf life of its entire range from 20 weeks to 26 weeks. An increase in production has been achieved as well, from 750kg to 1000kg per hour, according to local press reports.

“The investment demonstrates our commitment to the sector and is part of an ambitious growth plan to be able to offer greater capacity to meet consumer demand. We’re excited to be able to offer operators a product that now represents an even better investment thanks to the extended shelf life of the range,”  said John Joseph, operations manager at Burts Chips.

Burts Chips has also recently appointed a new sales director, Simon Knight, as part of the company’s development strategy. Burts Chips are hand-cooked in small batches.
