BP2017 Potato Industry Show is a potato gathering from seed to supermarket, taking place November 22 to 23, in the Yorkshire Event Centre, Harrogate, United Kingdom, having PotatoBusiness.com as an official media partner.

British Potato show has taken on an added dimension as the first show since the UK’s decision to fundamentally change its relationship with Europe and its trading focus with the rest of the world.

“The challenges and opportunities of Brexit, the global role for UK seed and technical lessons from around the world, all feature strongly in the official seminar program at the event,” says show organizer Steve Wellbeloved.

Additionally, among the record number of exhibitors – one in five is new to the show - many are showcasing goods and services relevant to global audiences.

Trade & Innovation Hub

This trading focus also extends to a special Trade & Innovation Hub, where the UK Government’s Department for International Trade will be highlighting its support for agritech, exports and inward investment.

“Also in this hub, Innovate UK/Knowledge Transfer Network will be exploring innovation for potato businesses of all sizes,” explains Wellbeloved. “And the area also hosts four key trade associations – British Potato Trade Association, Fresh Potato Trade Association, Potato Processors’ Association and the Snack, Nut and Crisp Manufacturers’ Association – who will discuss key industry issues on an informal basis”.

Trade issues also extend to the fringe program, for example, with the National Farmers Union staging a keynote open meeting on understanding the details of crop procurement contracts.

“Overall the show has always addressed the production, packing, processing and retail sectors in detail, but it’s clear the international trade dimension has even greater impetus this year in the light of wider changes,” he says.

This is also reflected in overseas registrations. “Past shows have seen strong attendance from across mainland Europe and from key economies like Australia, China, India, Japan, North America and Russia. Already this time, registration data is showing strong visitor interest from mainland Europe and hotels are reporting good overseas interest from people wanting to combine the technical and business aspects of the show with the wider delights of Harrogate and Yorkshire in the run up to Christmas. No doubt this is being helped by the shift in exchange rates which makes visiting the show more cost-effective than ever for overseas visitors. At the same time this also helps to explain the level of enquiries from potential European exhibitors as the currency position makes exhibitor packages significantly cheaper, while arguably increasing the need for promotion because imports of European machinery and other products into the UK are costing UK buyers more.”
