PotatoEurope 2018, which took place September, 12-13, at the Estate Bockerode in Springe-Mittelrode, near Hanover, Germany, attracted nearly 10,000 visitors from more than 60 countries, according to the organizer, the German Agricultural Society (DLG).

"PotatoEurope 2018 showed that new techniques in the cultivation of potatoes has not only aroused national interest, but also attracted strong attention from an international audience. Special features focusing on topics such as “mechanical weed control” and "optoelectronic sorting”, as well as this year’s “Meeting Point for Organic Potatoes”, drew large numbers of visitors from both home and abroad,” said DLG vice president René Döbelt.

More than one in three of those attending PotatoEurope 2018 came from outside Germany, with the Netherlands, Poland, Great Britain, Belgium, Denmark, France, Austria, Italy and Spain particularly well represented this year. A number of potato experts from Africa, Asia, and North and South America also used the event to explore the information available about new and proven varieties and seeds, as well as technology for potato production and processing, crop management, fertilizer recommendations and crop protection.

"The drought we have experienced this summer and the reactions to the likely potato yield losses have underlined just how important a reliable supply of high-quality potatoes is. PotatoEurope is the central showcase for technology leaps in potato production for the entire value chain. In addition, the event offers impressive prospects and alternatives for cultivation and marketing opportunities in the future,” said DLG Supervisory Board Member Martin Umhau.

The exhibitors were particularly impressed by the quality of professional visitors that they met at the event, and well-founded, intensive discussions characterized the atmosphere on the stands of the 239 exhibitors from 14 countries taking part.

The next PotatoEurope will take place September, 4-5, 2019 near Tournai, Belgium, when the organizer will be Fedagrim (Belgian federation of agricultural suppliers). Germany will host PotatoEurope again in 2022.
