Demand and consumption in the potato market remain relatively stable, according to the latest potato market report published by the Irish Farmers’ Association (IFA) on 17 June.

The IFA noted a slight increase in demand from the food service sector and said that “a good market remains for pre-packing quality potatoes, however they are becoming increasingly scarce.”

According to the report, delayed harvests at the back end of the season and a lack of desiccants have contributed to quality issues in storage.

In the early potato sector, harvesting continues as crops become fit, with the IFA reporting that demand remains strong and quality has been excellent to date.

The association also highlighted challenges in the European processing sector. “Factories are clearing their contractual commitment as best they can but sales of product are still behind expectation,” the report stated.

Maintenance shutdowns and holiday closures are expected to begin from July onwards, while there are indications that contract loading of old-crop potatoes could continue into August.

Looking ahead to the 2026 crop, the IFA said estimates from many growing regions suggest planted area is down by approximately 10-15%.
