Irish Potato Demand Remains High

Potato demand is still strong in Ireland, both for consumers and retailers. Due to the increased availability of new season types, which are helping with supply, stocks are still getting scarce.
“Main season crops are progressing well with higher temperatures the past week. Conditions conducive to blight have been present for the past few days,” the latest IFA report reveals.
According to news accounts, Scotland’s seed planting acreage is slightly higher than the previous year. The area entered this year is 10,256 hectares, up 190 hectares or 2% from 10,066 hectares the last year.
“In the U.K. […] there is still demand for old season crop, however, stocks are nearly clear. Salad crops are being lifted as they become ready and there is very little or no free buy available. In terms of new maincrop- marfona has been burnt off on the East but the skin set has been slow. If growth rates do not improve, continuity will be an issue,” the experts concluded.
