Strong Roots Turns to Algae Oil for New Frozen Fries

Strong Roots has unveiled Feel Good Fries, a frozen potato product made with algae oil, with retail availability scheduled for January 2027.
Presented during New York Climate Week, the product responds to demand for alternatives to seed oils, according to the company. Strong Roots said its approach reflects consumer preferences while maintaining its commitment to science, rather than endorsing concerns about seed oils.
“But we also believe brands need to meet consumers where they are,” the company said in its announcement.
Strong Roots said it had ruled out beef tallow and avocado oil because of their environmental impact. It claims the algae oil used in the new fries has around half the carbon emissions of avocado oil.
According to Food Ingredients First, the fries also use potatoes grown through regenerative agricultural methods. The publication reported that Strong Roots is developing a separate baking platform for frozen products with no added oil, with launches expected during the first half of 2027.
The developments extend the company’s reformulation work across both ingredients and processing. The algae-oil fries and the zero-added-oil products are separate initiatives, with different launch schedules.
