The Idaho Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) is seeking comment on a permit McCain Foods needs in connection with its plans to add capacity at its 98-acre potato-processing complex near Burley.

McCain said in a permit application that it plans to add a French fry processing line and construct new building space to house this equipment, as well as new dry storage and new potato receiving operations. Primary air-emission sources from the new equipment will be from the dryer, fryer, boiler and associated air units.

Idaho DEQ will accept public comment through June 18 on a proposed air-quality permit to construct for McCain. The proposed permit will regulate emissions

Idaho DEQ said in a release that it determined McCain’s construction and operation of the equipment under proposed permit conditions would not cause or contribute to a violation of any ambient-air-quality standard, and would not injure or unreasonably affect human or animal life or vegetation.

The department’s modified permit requires McCain to take precautions to prevent particulates from becoming airborne. Post-construction, these could include using hoods, fans and filters as well as covering materials that are being transported.
