U.S. Retail Potato Volumes Rise 2.3% As Prices Ease; Value Holds Near USD19.9bn

U.S. retail potato volumes grew 2.3% in the 52 weeks to 29 June 2025, even as average grocery prices per pound fell 2.7%, according to Potatoes USA’s analysis of Circana point-of-sale data. Total retail potato sales were $19.86 billion, down 0.5% year over year, while volumes (fresh-weight equivalent) reached 8.63 billion pounds.
Category performance was mixed. Fresh potatoes (+2.6% volume) and frozen potatoes (+3.7%) led gains, with deli-prepared sides also higher (+1.6%). Potato chips were essentially flat (+0.2%). Volumes declined for dehydrated (“instant”) potatoes (-2.0%), refrigerated potatoes (-0.4%), and canned potatoes (-1.1%). On value, most categories edged lower alongside price deflation, with exceptions in refrigerated (+1.2% dollars) and deli-prepared sides (+4.4% dollars).
Within fresh potatoes, volume growth was driven by russets (+4.0%), yellow (+5.5%), petite (+7.8%) and fingerling (+1.5%) varieties. Reds (-11.0%), whites (-4.0%) and purples (-5.5%) declined. The average fresh price per pound fell 5.6% year over year; russets saw the steepest price drop (-11.8%), followed by whites (-7.6%) and petites (-3.2%). Fresh potato dollar sales declined 3.2% to $4.28 billion.
Packaging and pack-size trends favored formats aligned with value and convenience. Bags accounted for 87% of fresh potato volume and increased 2.2% in volume; bulk also grew (+1.7%), as did trays (+34.6% from a small base). By pack size, 1–<2 lb (+7.4%), 2–4 lb (+10.5%), 8 lb (+17.8%) and 10 lb (+3.6%) bags posted gains, while 5 lb (-0.7%) and >10 lb (-27.3%) declined.
