Europe’s Potato Crop ‘Could Be Close to Average’

Recent test digs conducted throughout Europe indicate that later plantings are starting to catch up in yields, and the total harvest may be almost average.
According to reports, the Markies potato variety yields less in Belgium due to a high quantity of tubers, but more than normal in Northern France.
“Following on from the storm a few weeks ago, in Poland, the worst area affected was in the southwest which is not a major production area. In all the affected areas, losses in-store may be an issue,” the IFA potato experts added.
Sales and consumption of potatoes are said to be stable in Ireland these days. While some locations welcomed the rain last week to bring the amounts of dry matter down, several areas got more than anticipated.
“There are continued reports that yields are disappointing especially on later planted crops. It will be another few weeks before any significant volumes are lifted into store especially north of Dublin,” the IFA potato experts concluded.
