German Association Warns about Smaller Potato Chips due to Extreme Weather

The heat wave in Germany also affects the harvest of potato varieties needed to make potato chips. Due to the special climatic situation, it is estimated that 30% of crops are threatened to fail, according to the Federal Association of the German Confectionery Industry e.V. (BDSI).
In addition, the association says that a larger quantity of potatoes will be needed, to produce a bag of potato chips than in years with an average harvest. They also add that there is no protection against this and the exact extent of the impairment is not clear until the harvest is completed in the fall.
However, it is already certain that manufacturers will come under pressure during a reduced harvest. The BDSI joins the appeal to the fairness of all involved. The Federal Minister Julia Klöckner said in a press conference that the Government will provide a federal-state aid program for farmers.
The current situation on the potato market must be met by all producers of potato snack products. “Sharp rising commodity prices could lead to price increases that could be passed on to the consumer. But that’s what the competition alone decides,”says Dr. Carsten Bernoth, spokesman for the specialty snacks segment in the BDSI. In addition, in some European countries, the harvest situation is similar or more difficult.
According to manufacturers, they will take the appropriate measures to ensure the well-known high quality of potato chips. However, due to climatic conditions, the potato slices are smaller this year.
