Intersnack to Invest EUR85 Million in German Plant Expansion with Focus on Sustainability

Intersnack, one of Europe’s leading salty snacks manufacturers, has announced a significant €85 million investment into its Alsbach facility in southwestern Germany, as part of a strategic effort to expand capacity, modernise production, and improve environmental performance.
The company plans to construct a 10,000 square-metre extension to its existing plant near Darmstadt. The new infrastructure will include a production hall and an integrated logistics area, aimed at streamlining operations and supporting further growth across Intersnack’s portfolio, which includes well-known brands such as Estrella and McCoy’s.
“As one of the market leaders in the salty snacks category, we want to continue our growth of recent years,” said Jan van den Broek, Managing Director for Operations at Intersnack’s German business unit. “Important prerequisites for this are sufficient capacities, state-of-the-art production technologies and qualified and committed employees.”
The expansion is scheduled to begin construction in summer 2026. Once completed, it is expected to significantly increase output at the site, while securing the long-term employment of the 470 workers currently based at the plant.
A key element of the project is Intersnack’s focus on sustainability. The company aims to cut CO₂ emissions at the Alsbach facility by more than half through a transition to renewable energy sources. “For this reason, we are investing in a long-term and secure future for the Alsbach site. A special focus is on increasing sustainability and optimising our production processes,” van den Broek added.
This investment forms part of a broader modernisation strategy within Intersnack’s German operations, which include five production plants across the country. The Cologne-headquartered company continues to pursue growth both organically and through acquisitions. In 2024, its UK arm KP Snacks acquired the Whole Earth peanut butter brand from French food group Ecotone, further diversifying its product portfolio.
Intersnack employs over 2,200 people in the UK and maintains seven manufacturing sites, underscoring its presence across key European markets as demand for salty and savoury snacks – including potato-based products – continues to climb.
