Produce Investments Expands Agri-Tech Portfolio With Biofresh Safestore Acquisition

Produce Investments (PI), a UK-based company specialising in potato growing, crop storage, and agri-tech innovation, has announced the acquisition of Biofresh Safestore, an established leader in fixed crop management systems.
Biofresh Safestore has been a prominent player in the field of sprout control for more than two decades, developing fixed installation systems for crop storage facilities across the UK, Europe, and Japan. Under the continued involvement of Jeremy Barraclough, who has built a particularly strong presence for the company in France, Biofresh Safestore brings valuable technical expertise and a loyal customer base to the PI group.
The acquisition is part of PI’s broader strategy to expand its technology portfolio and strengthen its position in sustainable post-harvest solutions. It complements the group’s existing capabilities through its Restrain brand, a well-established provider of natural, ethylene-based sprout suppression systems for potatoes, onions, and other crops. Together, Restrain and Biofresh Safestore will enable PI to offer a wider range of solutions—from portable to fixed sprout suppression systems—through a single trusted partner.
“This acquisition represents an important step in PI group growth journey,” said Rachel Cook-Coulson, CEO of Produce Investments.
Dan Hewitt, Managing Director of Restrain UK, added: “By combining the strength of Restrain and Biofresh Safestore, we’re accelerating our expansion across Europe and globally. Together, we will deliver greater value to customers through innovative, nature-powered technologies that advance the future of crop storage.”
Produce Investments operates across several areas of the potato and agri-tech value chain. Its subsidiaries include Greenvale, one of the UK’s largest suppliers of fresh potatoes to retail, foodservice, and wholesale markets; Restrain, a technology-driven agtech business specialising in sustainable post-harvest solutions; and Produce Solutions, the group’s agronomy and R&D division supporting varietal development, crop quality, and grower innovation.
With the addition of Biofresh Safestore, Produce Investments reinforces its position as a key player in Europe’s crop storage and post-harvest technology market, offering integrated solutions that combine innovation, sustainability, and operational efficiency.
