European Potato Retail Sales Are ‘Holding Well’

Retail sales in the fresh potato sector are holding up well throughout Europe despite recent price rises, although since COVID-19, there has been a clear shift toward home-cooked fries as opposed to fresh.
“Export prices are also holding firm. In Eastern Europe, domestic demand is still being covered by their production but inquiries are being made about availability later in the season,” according to the latest IFA potato report.
Another cold wave in Ireland is increasing demand, which is driving up sales and consumption. Pre-pack quality is becoming harder to come by, and there seem to be a lot of questions regarding what’s left in stock.

“The viability of any crop which was unharvested is now in doubt after the latest cold snap. This will further tighten supplies,” the IFA experts concluded.
