The New Potato King of Canada – Alberta

Prince Edward Island (P.E.I.) is no longer Canada’s leading potato producer. Alberta, the Prairie province is now the potato king of Canada.
According to the most current Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada estimate, which was reported by CBC, Alberta produced 21.8% of Canadian potatoes in 2022, just 0.2% more than Prince Edward Island. Manitoba is also right behind, with 21.3%.
Businesses like the Little Potato Company have helped Alberta overtake Prince Edward Island in potato output. In fact, according to the P.E.I. Potato Board, potato production on the island has reached its peak.
The North American frozen French fry sector, in particular, continues to grow in demand. As a result, provinces such as Alberta are beginning to meet the need.
According to the aforementioned source, some Alberta potatoes, such as those from the Little Potato Company, can be bought at grocery stores on P.E.I. It began as a father-daughter enterprise in Edmonton in 1996 and has now grown to over 400 employees.
P.E.I. still has more potato farms than Alberta, although the number has decreased from 262 in 2011 to 175 in 2021. Alberta dropped from 149 to 123 throughout the same period. Agriculture and Agri-Foods Canada reports that P.E.I. continues to have the most potato farms in the country.
