Potato Crops Decline in the USA

The USDA has released 2017 data on potato crops in the USA, revealing that area planted was diminished from 923,800 acres in 2016 to 908,000 in 2017, while the area harvested was also smaller from 909,600 acres to 902,300. The production also declined from 406,638 units in 2016 to 399,838.
Farmers planted 310,000 acres of potatoes in Idaho, down 5% from 2016. Production was 131 million hundredweight, down 6% from the previous year. Yield was estimated at 425 hundredweight per acre, down 5 hundredweight compared to 2016.
In Oregon, potatoes planted totaled 39,000 acres, unchanged from 2016. Harvested area, at 38,900 acres is unchanged from last year. Production totaled 21.4 million cwt, down 7% from a year ago. Yield is estimated at 550 cwt per acre, down 40 cwt from 2016.
Potato planted in Washington totaled 165,000 acres down 3% from 2016. Harvested area, at 165,000 acres, down 2% from last year. Production totaled 99.0 million cwt, down 6% from a year ago. Yield is estimated at 600 cwt per acre, down 25 cwt from 2016.
