The Chinese Potato Exports Rose in 2022’s First Eight Months

The entire volume of fresh or refrigerated potatoes exported by China from January to August 2022 (apart from seed usage) was over 220,300 tons, an increase of about 2.57% from the same time last year. The total value of fresh or refrigerated spud exports was approximately USD119.65m, a rise of nearly 6.43% compared with the same period last year.
In August alone, China exported roughly 45,390 tons of fresh or chilled tubers (other than for seed use), a decrease of about 16.43% month over month from 54,310 tons in July. In comparison with the export volume of 38,350 tons shipped during the same period last year that means a rise of roughly 18.35% year over year. This month’s exports were worth roughly USD25.31m in total, up about 15.79% from the same time the previous year.
Roughly 1,580 tons of frozen spuds were exported from China in total last month, down about 4.37% from the same time last year. The shipments came to about USD1.53m in total, which is about 0.16% less than it was at the same time last year.
A total of 1,170 tons of potato starch were exported in August 2022, up roughly 679.28% from the same month the previous year. In comparison to the same period the previous year, the total export value was roughly USD1.09m, an increase of nearly 455.60%.
Tater Export Country Profiles
In terms of exporting countries/regions, the top ten countries or regions that imported fresh or refrigerated taters from China in August 2022 were, in order, Vietnam, Malaysia, Myanmar, Thailand, Singapore, Hong Kong, Macau, the Russian Federation, Brunei, and Timor-Leste.
A total of 16,870 tons of fresh or chilled potatoes were imported by Vietnam from China in August 2022, a decrease of about 19.20% from the same month the previous year. Around USD14.58m went towards these exports, down around 11.22% from the same period the year before.
Malaysia came in second, importing roughly 10,490 tons of fresh or chilled Chinese potatoes, a decrease of about 3.34% from the same time the previous year. The sum was almost USD3.66m, up roughly 35.66% from the same time the previous year.
The volume exported to Myanmar is about 9,920 tons, with a value of about USD2.89m. Overall, a total of 13 countries imported fresh or chilled potatoes from China in August.
In August this year, the top three countries and regions for China’s frozen potato exports were Japan, South Korea, and Hong Kong. Among them, the amount exported to Japan was 850 tons, a decrease of about 22.42% year-on-year. Exports amounted to approximately USD0.91m, a decrease of approximately 19.43% year-on-year.
In August, the top three countries and regions for potato starch exports from China were the Russian Federation, Taiwan, and Mongolia. Among them, the volume exported to the Russian Federation was 1,130 tons, an increase of about 15550.34% year-on-year. The export value was about USD1.04m, an increase of about 14276.34% year-on-year.
The export unit price of fresh or refrigerated potatoes from China in August 2022 was USD558/ton, compared with the export unit price of USD490/ton in July, an increase of about 13.88% month-on-month. Compared with the export unit price of USD570/ton in August 2021, it fell by about 2.11% year-on-year.
