Gujarat Emerges as India’s Top Producer of Processed Potatoes

Gujarat has overtaken other Indian states to become the country’s leading producer of processed potatoes in 2024–25, a key development that is helping reduce India’s reliance on imports while creating fresh export opportunities. Enhanced farming practices, robust government support, and strong demand from food chains and international markets have propelled this growth.
Banaskantha Leads Gujarat’s Potato Success
Banaskantha district continues to set the pace in processed potato production for the third consecutive year. In 2024–25, the district produced 1.87 million tonnes of potatoes from over 61,000 hectares, up from 1.56 million tonnes in 2023–24. With an impressive productivity rate of 30.65 tonnes per hectare, Banaskantha has become a cornerstone of Gujarat’s ability to meet the rising demand for French fry-grade potatoes.
Other key contributors include Sabarkantha, which harvested 1.29 million tonnes, and Aravalli, which produced 699,000 tonnes. Aravalli, a relatively new entrant to potato farming, has achieved rapid growth thanks to favorable climatic conditions and enhanced agricultural infrastructure.
Infrastructure and Export Potential
The northern districts of Gujarat now boast advanced cold storage networks that allow potatoes to be stored in optimal conditions for year-round processing. This infrastructure has positioned the region as a critical supplier to frozen food manufacturers and quick-service restaurants (QSRs).
Popular varieties such as Lady Rosetta, Kufri Chipsona, and Santana, known for their high dry matter and low sugar content, are particularly well-suited for French fries and chips that meet global quality benchmarks. These varieties have also opened export channels to markets in the Middle East.
Government Initiatives Driving Growth
Gujarat’s rise in processed potato production reflects concerted efforts by both central and state governments. Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for value-added agriculture and Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel’s policy support, farmers have been equipped with the tools and knowledge to cultivate processing-grade potato varieties.
Collaborations between the Agriculture Department, Gujarat Agro Industries Corporation, and local farmers have positioned Gujarat as a model for integrating agriculture with food processing industries, boosting farmer incomes and creating a pipeline for export-oriented growth.
