Dutch Chilled Potato Producer CêlaVíta Collapses Amid Market Pressures

Dutch chilled potato producer CêlaVíta has been declared bankrupt, bringing an abrupt halt to decades of production and placing more than 200 jobs at risk.
Employees at the company’s Wezep facility in Gelderland were informed of the insolvency on 12 August, with a court-appointed trustee now set to determine whether a restart is possible. The bankruptcy follows a turbulent period for the business, which has faced shrinking demand, failed restructuring efforts, and broken negotiations with buyers and unions.
CêlaVíta, a pioneer in chilled potato convenience products, was acquired by McCain in 2012 before being sold in 2024 to private investment fund Nimbus. At the time, the company was seen as a stable operation, generating an estimated €60 million in turnover. However, persistent financial difficulties deepened over the past year.
According to DutchNews.nl, unions had been in dispute with management over wage demands earlier in the summer, with a strike narrowly avoided. Margreet Pasman of union FNV described the collapse as “not surprising, but sad, especially for our colleagues.”
Industry analysts point to a combination of factors behind the failure. Reporting by Boerenbusiness described it as the result of a “toxic cocktail” of issues. The chilled potato market has been in decline, with consolidation among competitors and heightened cost pressures. Efforts to pivot towards fresh fries and potato pasta were hampered by overcapacity in the market, while the Wezep site reportedly struggled with outdated infrastructure. Rising labour costs and a collapse in an Albert Heijn supply agreement—worth as much as 20% of CêlaVíta’s sales, according to industry sources—added to the strain, though the retailer has disputed the scale of the withdrawal.
At present, the company’s future rests with the trustee, who will assess whether parts of the business can continue under new ownership. Analysts quoted by Boerenbusiness suggested that a restart without legacy financial burdens remains a possibility.
CêlaVíta’s collapse represents one of the most significant failures in recent years within the Dutch potato sector and underscores the growing pressures facing processors as consumer trends shift and traditional cost structures prove increasingly unsustainable.
