U.S. Retail Potato Sales Show Higher Volumes, Slight Value Decline Amid Softer Prices

U.S. retail potato sales remained resilient in the 12 months to June 2025, with total volumes up 2.3% year on year as consumers continued to trade into potatoes across fresh and frozen formats. While value sales edged 0.5% lower to $19.86 billion, the decline reflected softer average pricing rather than weaker demand. Potatoes USA notes that volumes were 13% higher than in July 2018–June 2019, underscoring demand above pre-pandemic levels.
Growth was led by fresh potatoes (+2.6%), frozen (+3.7%) and deli-prepared sides (+1.6%). Chips were broadly flat (+0.2%), while dehydrated (-2.0%), refrigerated (-0.4%) and canned (-1.1%) fell modestly. A 2.7% decrease in the average consumer price per pound across all potatoes was the principal driver of the slight value decline; only refrigerated (+1.6%), deli-prepared sides (+2.8%) and canned (+0.4%) posted price increases. Consequently, most categories saw lower dollar sales year on year, with the exception of refrigerated (+1.2%) and deli-prepared sides (+4.4%).
Within fresh, the mix shifted toward russet (+4.0%), yellow (+5.5%), petite (+7.8%) and fingerling (+1.5%) potatoes, offsetting lower sales of red (-11%), white (-4%) and purple (-5.5%). The average retail price per pound for fresh potatoes declined 5.6% from the prior year—led by double-digit price relief in russets (-11.8%)—and fresh dollar sales dipped 3.2% as a result.
Pack formats also influenced momentum. Fresh potatoes sold in bulk, bags and trays all gained volume. In the dominant bagged segment—accounting for 87% of fresh potato sales—growth was concentrated in under-1 to under-2 lb (+7.2%), 2–4 lb (+10.5%), 8 lb (+17.8%) and 10 lb (+3.6%) packs. The underlying data are compiled by Circana (IRI) from retailer point-of-sale systems.
