Mettler-Toledo Launches M50 R-Series Metal Detectors

Mettler-Toledo Product Inspection has introduced the M50 R-Series AdvancedLine metal detectors, a new generation of inspection systems developed for food manufacturers operating under tighter compliance, traceability and line-performance requirements.
The launch, announced on April 27, 2026, covers metal detection systems designed for unpackaged and packaged food products, including wet, dry and bulk applications.
According to the company, the M50 R-Series reflects changing requirements in food production, where metal detection performance is increasingly linked with audit readiness, data connectivity, secure access control and integration with production and quality systems.
“The launch of the M50 R-Series reflects how closely we have listened to our customers,” said Jaison Anand, Market Manager – Metal Detection at Mettler-Toledo Product Inspection. “Here at Mettler-Toledo, we understand the pressures that food manufacturers are faced with every day; balancing productivity with increasing expectations around compliance, traceability and digital connectivity. As production lines become faster and more complex, maintaining that balance becomes even more challenging.”
He added: “The M50 R-Series has been developed to help address these challenges, delivering advanced detection performance alongside intuitive operation and future-ready connectivity, supporting manufacturers not only today but as their requirements continue to evolve.”
The new range is built around three core areas: performance, productivity and protection. Mettler-Toledo said the systems are designed to detect small metal contaminants, reduce false rejects, support uptime and strengthen compliance-related record keeping.
The series includes the M55R, aimed at dry products such as pasta, savoury snacks and deep-frozen produce where thawing does not occur; the M55RB, developed for bulk products such as sacks, powder bags and cartons; and the M56R, designed for more challenging applications including chilled, wet, dry, deep-frozen or thawing products, as well as metalized film-wrapped products.
The M50 R-Series incorporates technologies including eDrive PLUS, 900 kHz frequency, 3S PLUS algorithms and AI-based machine learning. According to Mettler-Toledo, these features are intended to improve detection sensitivity, particularly for small wire and non-spherical metal contaminants, while helping reduce false rejects.
For operation on production lines, the systems include a 10.1-inch capacitive touchscreen designed for use with gloves or in wet conditions. The company also highlights the INFINITY Electronic Test System, which automates routine performance monitoring and can run tests without operator intervention.
Connectivity features include embedded Wi-Fi, QR code access to system information, condition monitoring software and simplified data transfer. The systems also include RFID access control for individual user logins and access management.
Manufacturers can also integrate the systems with Mettler-Toledo’s ProdX data management software, which records inspection activity and stores data for audit and compliance purposes. Communication protocols include OPC-UA and EtherNet/IP.
The company said the platform supports alignment with food safety standards including BRCGS and International Featured Standards.
The M50 R-Series will make its first global exhibition appearance at Interpack 2026 in Düsseldorf, where Mettler-Toledo will exhibit in Hall 11, Stand A60. The system is also scheduled to be shown at PackExpo following Interpack.
