Europe: Later Planted Potato Crops Still Have a Lot of Catching Up To Do

It is said that later planted potato harvests in Europe still have a long way to go and that the next five weeks will be crucial. Some of the latter plantings in Holland are ‘flowering profusely’ because the ridges have not closed.
“In the U.K. crops have yields well to date but more questions will be asked of later planted crops, particularly of later maturing varieties such as Markies. Soils have become dry in the South and East and fields which were not in good condition when planted are now starting to show signs of stress,” according to the latest IFA report.
As schools resume after the summer break, potato consumption at home and in retail establishments in Ireland will increase throughout the following two weeks.
“Some more quantities of early season Rooster are coming available on the market. This supply along with Queens on the market is easing the pressure on the supply of old season stocks,” the IFA potato experts concluded.
