Global Potato Industry Unites to Celebrate International Day of Potato 2025

The global potato industry is set to commemorate the annual International Day of Potato on May 30, 2025. This observance, established by the United Nations General Assembly in December 2023, aims to highlight the potato’s significant role in global food security, nutrition, and economic development.
The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) emphasizes the potato’s journey from its origins in the Andes to becoming the world’s leading non-grain food crop, with a record annual production of 383 million tonnes in 2023. Developing countries now account for more than half of global output, with demand and consumption continuing to rise.
Yurdi Yasmi, Director of FAO’s Plant Production and Protection Division, stated, “From the soil to the plate, the potato holds the power to transform lives.” He emphasized the need to accelerate the adoption of climate-smart varieties and agronomic practices, scale up access to quality seeds, and promote integrated pest management to ensure a sustainable, food-secure future.
Global Celebrations and Initiatives
In Kenya, the National Potato Council of Kenya (NPCK) and partners will host the International Day of Potato and National Potato Conference and Trade Fair on May 29–30 in Nakuru County. The event will relaunch the Crop Irish Potato Regulations 2019, showcase innovations, and promote structured value chain partnerships.
South Africa’s Potatoes SA is organizing fresh produce market days at the Cape Town Fresh Produce Market and the Johannesburg Fresh Produce Market on May 27 and 30, respectively. These events aim to highlight the nutritional advantages of potatoes, showcase various cultivars, and engage with market buyers.
In Europe, a coalition of agri-food organizations, including the European Potato Processors’ Association (EUPPA) and the European Potato Trade Association (Europatat), will host a special event on May 27 in Brussels. The event will spotlight Europe’s dynamic potato sector and promote awareness of innovation and best practices across the supply chain.
Educational Resources and Campaigns
To support awareness-raising efforts, the FAO has launched a global campaign highlighting the dietary, socioeconomic, and environmental benefits of potato production. Resources include the second edition of “A Guide to International Day of Potato,” available in multiple languages, and a digital media hub with official visual identity and communication materials.
The World Potato Congress (WPC) continues to collaborate with the FAO in promoting the International Day of Potato. The WPC encourages stakeholders worldwide to utilize the provided guides and visual materials to celebrate the potato in their regions and share their campaigns using the hashtag #InternationalDayofPotato.
Looking Ahead
As the world observes the International Day of Potato 2025, the focus remains on recognizing the potato’s historical significance and its potential to contribute to a sustainable and food-secure future. Stakeholders across the globe are encouraged to participate in events and initiatives that celebrate this vital crop and its impact on societies worldwide.
