PotatoEurope 2025 Demonstration Fields Planted Under Ideal Conditions in Lelystad

Preparations for PotatoEurope 2025 are off to a strong start, with the demonstration fields now successfully planted under excellent conditions at the Open Crops site of Wageningen University & Research (WUR) in Lelystad, the Netherlands.
The planting, completed in early April, marks a key milestone in the run-up to the international event, which will take place on September 3–4, 2025. Jacob de Jong, farm manager of WUR’s business unit, is overseeing the 25 hectares dedicated to harvesting demonstrations and expressed satisfaction with the smooth beginning to the growing season.
The selected variety for this year’s demonstrations is Alegria, a mid-early potato known for its high yield, drought tolerance, and broad versatility. With its oval tubers, light-yellow flesh, and excellent taste, Alegria is suitable for both fresh consumption and processing into French fries. Its moderate to low susceptibility to common potato diseases adds to its appeal for growers. Post-harvest, the crop will be marketed through Schaap Holland in Biddinghuizen.
To ensure optimal crop development, seed potatoes were treated with Maxim, and the rows received Amistar and liquid phosphate fertilizer. The marine clay soil—containing about 30% silt—benefits from a favorable crop rotation. Winter wheat was grown last season, followed by yellow mustard as a green manure crop, which was incorporated into the soil in December. Base fertilization has been applied according to standard recommendations, with no animal manure used. The planting distance within rows is set at 26 centimetres.
“The relatively dry winter and spring, with some frost in February, left us with well-crumbling soil—ideal for planting,” noted De Jong. “Starting early gives us a good window for desiccation in early August, which should result in a strong yield for the harvesting demonstrations.”
At PotatoEurope 2025, visitors will see live harvesting demonstrations featuring a variety of machines from leading manufacturers including AVR, Dewulf, Grimme, and Ropa. The event promises a comprehensive showcase of the latest mechanization and technology in potato farming.
Beyond the field demos, the event will feature an extensive exhibitor line-up, highlighting innovations across the potato supply chain—from cultivation to processing and sales.
“This is a must-attend event for industry professionals to exchange knowledge and strengthen business networks,” said event organizer Kuno Jacobs, speaking from the freshly planted fields.
With a promising start in the field, PotatoEurope 2025 is set to once again offer a dynamic platform for the international potato community.
