Fortress Technology Launches Next-Generation Touchscreen Interface To Strengthen Food Safety Compliance

Fortress Technology has introduced a new touchscreen human-machine interface (HMI) for its food metal detection systems, designed to help manufacturers improve food safety management, streamline compliance processes and reduce the risk of human error on the production floor.
The new interface features a simplified navigation structure with large buttons, high-contrast icons and a multi-colour warning system intended to provide operators with rapid access to critical control point (CCP) information. According to the company, the design enables staff to review alerts, access event logs and respond more quickly to food safety incidents in fast-paced manufacturing environments.
The touchscreen incorporates both light and dark display modes, enhancing visibility of alerts, operational data and system status information. Fortress Technology says the interface supports real-time monitoring while providing immediate access to event logs and faster product setup, helping processors maintain reliable metal detection performance and compliance with food safety standards.
Production information displayed on the HMI includes contaminant detection events, conveyor and reject bin status, throughput metrics, sensitivity settings and details of the product currently being inspected. Event data is automatically logged and can be extracted for reporting and traceability purposes.
Quality assurance reports can be exported directly via USB or automated through Fortress Technology’s Contact 4.0 digital reporting platform. The company says this functionality improves real-time traceability, simplifies audit preparation and automates performance verification record keeping.
For facilities requiring more advanced connectivity, optional OPC UA and EtherNet/IP communication adapters enable integration with plant monitoring systems, ERP platforms and databases, supporting customised real-time data collection and reporting.
When combined with Fortress Technology’s Halo Automatic Testing system, the touchscreen interface helps processors verify the performance of food metal detectors and support compliance with food safety frameworks including HACCP, GFSI and BRCGS requirements, as well as retailer and supply chain standards.
The touchscreen measures 18.3 cm by 11.4 cm and is compatible across the company’s metal detector portfolio. Fortress Technology notes that processors using existing Stealth and Interceptor gravity, pipeline and conveyor metal detectors can upgrade to the new interface without extensive equipment modifications.
“Providing a high-visibility interface supports day-to-day operational efficiency. It also makes it easier for manufacturers to adhere to regulatory standards and documentation requirements,” said Phil Brown, European Sales Director at Fortress Technology.
The company said it will continue offering its existing membrane-style and stainless steel HMIs alongside the new touchscreen option, providing manufacturers operating in demanding washdown environments with a range of interface choices tailored to different operational requirements.
Additional features include 500 pre-programmed product categories designed to reduce setup and training times, as well as a secure multi-level password system intended to prevent unauthorised changes to operating parameters. According to Fortress Technology, these measures help minimise human error and support food safety accountability throughout production operations.
