Canadian Potato Production Records Small Growth

Canadian potato production was 105.9 million hundredweight (4.8 million tonnes) in 2017, up 0.4% from 2016, according to Statistics Canada.
Prince Edward Island represented 22.3% of total potato production in 2017, followed by Manitoba (21.0%) and Alberta (19.4%). Harvested area was stable at 342,217 acres in 2017.
The average yield increased 0.4% to 309.4 hundredweight per harvested acre, with Alberta having the highest average yield of 390.7 hundredweight per acre.
In June, Statistics Canada reported that potato farmers planted 344,884 acres (139 571 hectares) of potatoes in 2017, down 0.6% from 2016, continuing the overall downward trend of the past 13 years. Seeded area decreased in every province except Quebec, Ontario and Alberta. Prince Edward Island accounted for 26% of total potato planted area in 2017, while Manitoba accounted for 19%.
