Brits Eat More Than Two Million Tonnes of Potatoes Each Year, According to Nanna Tate

Britons consume more than two million tonnes of potatoes annually, according to a survey quoted by potato brand Nanna Tate.
The nationwide poll of 2,000 UK adults indicated that the average person eats potatoes three times per week, with an average portion of almost 200 grams per sitting. Based on these findings, Nanna Tate estimated that annual per capita consumption amounts to around 31 kilograms.
When asked about preferred formats, chips and fries were reported as the most popular choice, enjoyed weekly by approximately three-quarters of adults, followed by mashed potatoes (41%), jacket potatoes (40%) and roast potatoes (36%).
Lucia Washbrook, Sales and Marketing Director at Nanna Tate, said: “From golden chips to buttery mash, potatoes are part of the nation’s DNA. Whether it’s a Sunday roast, a chippy tea or a pub meal, potatoes are almost always present. At Nanna Tate we’re all about championing the versatility and deliciousness of potatoes, through tasty recipe inspiration and encouraging people to unexpect the expected when it comes to the humble spud.”
Nanna Tate, developed by Branston and launched in late 2024, has been positioned as a fresh identity for potatoes in UK retail. The company’s latest campaign uses survey insights to underline the crop’s continued role in national diets while seeking to shift perceptions among younger consumers.
