Nine Novel Potato Varieties on the Market

After years of careful selection and testing, Agrico – a cooperative backed by over 1700 Dutch farmers – recently presented nine new potato varieties.
Agostino is a unique, red-skinned variety. It has uniformly sized oval tubers and a good underwater weight. It is an early maincrop variety and is characterized by its fast initial development and its nice firm foliage. This variety is perfectly suitable for various dishes like mashed potatoes or delicious roasted potatoes.
Armedi is an early maincrop processing variety with oval long tubers and a good yield, which makes it very suitable for the French fries industry. Armedi has resistance to pallida and G. rostochiensis and it has a fantastic frying quality until the end of the season. Armedi is not only suitable for the French fries industry, but because of its beautiful skin, it can also be sold washed and pre-packed.
Aztec Gold has an orange/yellow flesh color. It is a late-maturing variety, with an average number of tubers per plant. Due to its low sugar content, Aztec Gold is perfect for home French fries or crisps.
Fyone is the third starch variety with strong late blight resistance in the company’s portfolio. As well as outstanding, strong late blight resistance in tuber and foliage, Fyone also has a high starch yield per hectare, with excellent starch quality. Fyone is easy to grow, has a strong plant, and requires less nitrogen to grow. All in all, Fyone is a low-input variety, with high output for farmers and factories.
Napoleon is a high-yielding maincrop crisping variety with a good dry matter content. It has fast initial development and good final development. The variety has yellow skin with light yellow flesh. Napoleon excels because of the uniformly sized round oval tubers, excellent frying quality, very good dry matter distribution, and very few sugar defects in the final product.
Nirvana is a Next Generation early maincrop processing variety that is suitable for the French fries industry. The variety attracts attention because of its late blight resistance, yield, high dry matter content, and dry matter distribution. Nirvana is a strong plant with firm foliage. The variety has oval tubers and yellow flesh, with good storability. Nirvana is suitable for conventional and organic cultivation.
Salvera is a versatile ware variety suitable for both retail and traditional markets. It has good dry matter content and can be cooked in various ways. This variety has a beautiful overall appearance, with a stable yield and good regularity of tuber shape and size. A strong plant means it can be grown in tough conditions (e.g. high temperatures). It, therefore, has good potential not only in Europe but also in northern Africa or the Middle East. Due to its low waste percentage, Salvera is very attractive for retail packers.
Stacey has beautiful red skin, and yellow flesh color and is very regular in size. The relatively small tubers are perfect for retail bags of red-skin potatoes. Stacey is only slightly susceptible to late blight and has good harvest damage and blackspot tolerance. The culinary quality is very good, with a firm cooking type.
SW 10-8218 is an early main crop, yellow-fleshed, firm cooking retail variety with broad resistance to G. Pallida and good tuber late blight resistance. SW 10-8218 is characterized by reasonably fast initial development and good final development of the plant. This variety has oval, uniformly sized tubers. SW 10-8218 has a beautiful yellow skin color after cooking and has good culinary properties.
