European Potato Planting at a Slow Pace
Because of the persistently rainy weather and the need to sow early crops in certain regions, potato planting has progressed very slowly throughout Europe.
“Very first covered earlies from France are just coming onto the market this week. Progress in the U.K. is similar to that at home, with very little progress reported recently,” according to the latest IFA potato report.
Potato sales and consumption are still relatively high in Ireland for this time of year. The wet weather is delaying 2024’s plantings once more.
“There is light at the end of the tunnel as dryer weather is forecast, however, saturated ground will take time to dry out. As 2023 season stocks continue to tighten and with plantings further delayed, a gap in the market in late June is looking very likely,” the IFA potato experts concluded.
