France: Dormir Potato Sprout Suppressant’s Withholding Period Reduced to Three Days

DormFresh recently revealed that the French Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health & Safety (ANSES) has approved a considerable reduction in the withholding period (WHP) for Dormir from 30 days to just three days. This decision was made in response to the submission of new data. The change takes effect right now.
“This decision is great news for all stakeholders in the French potato sector as it allows for increased flexibility in sales,” Alice Lorriaux and Jean Paresys, DormFresh representatives in charge of the French market, mentioned.
The sector will benefit greatly from this legislative reform, which will allow farmers and wholesalers to meet market demands faster while still adhering to safety regulations.
Dormir is an innovative anti-sprouting solution that extends the dormancy of potatoes, effectively controlling early sprouting. By reducing tuber respiration, Dormir keeps potatoes in a dormant state, minimizing weight loss and maintaining quality. The product is versatile, suitable for any strategy, and can be used in both fresh and industrial storage settings.
Dormir’s active substance is 1,4-dimethylnaphthalene (1,4-DMN), which is produced naturally by potatoes and was discovered during research on potato volatiles in the 1970s and 80s. Since then, naturally occurring levels of 1,4-DMN have been recorded in potatoes.
Dormir is an effective potato sprout suppressant as a stand-alone product and can give full season control. The dose rates and application timings are dependent on the crop and storage practices.
Early application after harvest and before the first visible signs of germination allows optimal efficacy of Dormir to be achieved over a long storage period. Dormir has no negative impact on healing and can therefore be applied early. Its early application has been shown to reduce respiration, general metabolism, and therefore mass loss of the tubers.
Early application after harvest and before visible signs of sprout growth, results in optimum efficacy and efficiency of use over a long storage period. Dormir has no negative impact on curing or wound healing so can be applied early and has been shown to reduce respiration, shrinkage, and weight loss.
The first commercial applications of Dormir date back to 1996 in the USA. Since then, users have reported excellent efficacy as well as improved presentation and reduced damage due to compression and blows. The fungistatic activity of Dormir on potato tubers was detected by researchers at Pennsylvania State University in the U.S.
