IFA: 2024 Belgium Potato Production ‘Still Behind Last Year’

Due mostly to late planting, test digs in Belgium reveal that average yields are still lower than those of the previous year. The multi-year average is over a month behind the normal planting date.
In the U.K., burndown is well advanced in the South, and storage is now a priority, but from the North Midlands northward there are many later planted crops still green.
“In Yorkshire last week, some growers were still irrigating later planted processing crops,” the latest IFA report reveals.
In Ireland, warm weather this week may temporarily slow potato consumption.
“There are continued reports that later planted crops are slow to mature. Crops still have a good chance to catch up but with shorter day length and cooler overnight temperatures, this may be limited, even given the mild weather forecast,” the IFA potato experts concluded.
