Low Potato Yields in Numerous European Nations

Numerous European nations are reporting low potato yields and some dry matter problems as a result of recent weather.
In the UK, lifting has been limited as a result of widespread heavy rain. Crops are said to be in excellent condition, however, top growth has recently outpaced tuber growth, particularly on later plantings. Early plantings have good tuber numbers and good yield potential, while later plantings still have “a lot to do” and “low tuber number” is frequently observed, which may limit yield potential.
Ireland’s gloomy weather has contributed to strong home consumption and summer retail sales. This season, growers are still struggling with incredibly challenging ground conditions.
“At present, yields of new season Rooster are expected to be quite poor, with many growers reporting small numbers under plants. Poor conditions and projected low yields, coupled with exceedingly high input costs, will make this season very challenging for growers. Blight pressure remains high which is an additional cost and workload for growers,” a recent IFA report reveals.
Old-season Rooster potato varieties are currently in extremely short supply, with high prices reflecting this for any remaining stocks. The peeling stock is in high demand and at high costs as well. Where possible, the British Queen potato cultivar is still harvested.
