New Development Programme Aims to Secure the Future of the UK Potato Industry

In an effort to build a skilled and resilient next generation of professionals in the UK potato sector, GB Potatoes has launched a comprehensive training initiative in collaboration with the British Potato Trade Association (BPTA). The newly announced Potato Industry Development Programme, scheduled to run throughout 2026, is designed to provide early-career entrants with a strategic overview of the sector—from seed production to processing and policy.
The programme addresses a long-standing gap in industry-wide training following the closure of AHDB’s Next Generation Programme. According to GB Potatoes Chair Alex Godfrey, the new initiative is intended to build capacity across the supply chain and support the development of future growers, leaders and technical experts.
“With a current lack of training for new entrants within the potato industry, GB Potatoes has recognised the need to develop an initiative that supports the growth of our future leaders, building connections, knowledge and optimism within our industry,” Godfrey stated. “I am, therefore, delighted that alongside the British Potato Trade Association we can offer this incredible opportunity, and I would encourage anyone at the start of their career to apply – you never know where it might lead.”
The programme will be delivered in three phases:
-
February 2026: The first session will provide participants with direct exposure to major players including McCain, Branston, and Pipers Crisps.
-
June 2026: The second phase will focus on seed and agronomic innovation, featuring site visits to Science and Advice for Scottish Agriculture (SASA), Cygnet’s mini tuber facility, grower Robert Doig, machinery manufacturer Scanstone, and the James Hutton Institute, home to the European Potato collective.
-
November 2026: The final module will take place in London, where participants will explore the interface between the potato industry and policymaking, learning how lobbying bodies engage with government and how future leaders can contribute to shaping legislative and regulatory outcomes.
The training will also explore major themes shaping the industry’s future, including the role of technology, sustainability challenges, climate resilience, and evolving consumer expectations.
“With continuous change impacting our sector, from new technological advancements to extreme weather events, it is more important than ever that we create opportunities for the next generation to develop their understanding of how we can be resilient when it comes to growing our crops, efficient in processing and packaging, and developing strong messages that resonate with the consumer,” said Godfrey.
The cost of the programme is set at £1,000 for GB Potatoes members and £1,500 for non-members. This fee includes all accommodation, meals, and local transport. Places are limited, and applications must be submitted via the GB Potatoes website by 12 September 2025.
