Ukrainian Potato Breeders Developed a New Purple Flesh Spud

Breeders in the Chernihiv region’s Sedniv village’s research and production association “Chernihivelitkartoplia” created a rare purple flesh potato variety.
One of the foreign varieties, which were descendants of the once-found wild form in Peru, and their variety “Nahoroda” were crossed to produce the purple potato known as “Lybid”. Work on breeding took more than ten years.
Colored potatoes, in particular, “Lybid”, have the same flavor as conventional potatoes. However, it is prized for its high antioxidant content, is used as a natural food coloring, and is appropriate for processing, in particular the manufacturing of chips. It also appeals to its exotic appearance.
