Royal HZPC Group to Acquire IPM Potato Group, Expanding Global Seed Potato Leadership

Royal HZPC Group has announced the planned acquisition of Ireland-based IPM Potato Group, in a move that consolidates its global position as a leading force in seed potato breeding and export. The transaction, which remains subject to regulatory and shareholder approval, marks a significant expansion of HZPC’s breeding network and production base, particularly in the British Isles.
Founded in 1950, IPM Potato Group has built a strong international reputation as Ireland’s market leader in seed potato breeding, production, and export. The company also holds a prominent position in the United Kingdom as the largest exporter of protected and exclusive potato varieties. With operations spanning Ireland, Scotland, France, the Netherlands, and England, IPM exports to over 40 countries, focusing particularly on Mediterranean and North African markets.
For more than five decades, IPM has maintained a close research partnership with Teagasc, Ireland’s agriculture and food development authority, leading to the development of resilient, high-performing potato varieties adapted to diverse growing conditions.
“This announced collaboration within Royal HZPC Group opens up new opportunities for growth — together with our customers and growers,” said Marcel de Sousa, Managing Director of IPM Potato Group, in the company’s official statement. “Our conversations show that our visions for the future of our sector are closely aligned. At the same time, we maintain our own identity and direction. We see this as a valuable opportunity and look forward to building a strong future together.”
The move forms part of Royal HZPC Group’s broader strategy to enhance its global breeding and distribution capacity. The acquisition will increase the group’s total acreage by approximately 1,800 hectares, primarily from Scotland — one of the world’s leading seed potato regions.
“Alongside HZPC and STET, we are now strengthening our group with a leading brand in potato breeding and export from the British Isles,” said Hans Huistra, CEO of Royal HZPC Group. “They have strong customer relationships, collaborate closely with their growers, and place a high value on innovation. These qualities have led to seed potatoes that are recognised worldwide as high-quality starting material.”
Huistra added that the move “aligns with our strategic direction and growth ambitions”, enabling HZPC to reinforce its position in the United Kingdom and open new export opportunities in growth regions such as North Africa.
HZPC confirmed that IPM Potato Group will retain its existing name, management, and operational identity under de Sousa’s leadership. Both companies will work together to identify synergies in breeding, production, and distribution, with the shared goal of developing sustainable food solutions for global markets.
“With this acquisition we are accelerating our growth,” Huistra said. “Within the group, we will explore opportunities to strengthen each other and take even greater steps together.”
The acquisition remains conditional on approval from competition authorities and shareholders of Donegal Investment Group, IPM’s current owner.
