Potato Bowl Starts on September 13

Potato Bowl football game, billed as a battle between two of the largest potato growing regions in the United States (Idaho and the Red River Valley), takes place September 13-17, in East Grand Forks, Minnesota, USA.
This year will be the 51st edition, after on September 24, 1966 the first ever Potato Bowl was played at Memorial Stadium in Grand Forks.
The idea of creating a week of festivities to celebrate potatoes and football was the brainchild of UND athletic director Len Marti, head football voach Marv “Whitey” Helling, assistant football coach Jerry Olson and sports information director Lee Bohnet. In that first game in 1966, the Fighting Sioux thumped Idaho State 41-0.
Up to 10,000 people attend this event every year. Northern Plains Potato Growers plays a big part in organizing Potato Bowl activities.
