Europe: Potato Demand Exceeds Supply

Prices for early potato crop are presently exceptionally high throughout Europe, as demand outpaces supply.
The health and viability of the seeds are the primary causes of the emergence problems that agronomists continue to report with subsequent plantings, stating that the situation “is only likely to get worse.”
Exports of ware potatoes from France to the U.K. reached 12,019 tonnes by the end of April, up from 911 tonnes the previous year.
In Ireland, potato demand remains very strong for any new season crop fit for harvest. Only small quantities are available at present with very strong prices quoted for available produce.
“In this week’s Teagasc newsletter, growers are reminded not to clear fields at the expense of reduced yields when there is significant demand for produce. It is already muted that home-saved seed may affect both yield and quality at harvest,” the latest IFA report reveals.
