Greater Supply Weighs on UK Potato Prices

Market players indicate little trade activity and considerable availability on the UK free-buy market as January ends, especially for white potatoes, Harry Campbell from Mintec by Expana recently wrote.
“The Expana benchmark price (EBP) for English white potatoes was GBP340/mt on January 28, flat month-on-month (m-o-m), while the EBP for Scottish whites was GBP320/mt, reflecting a 3% decline over the same period. Potatoes with a higher baker content (above 50%) command a premium over standard grade 1 English white packing potatoes,” the expert said.
Due to high demand and price increases in December, when potato sales are usually at their highest, many customers are now mostly protected by contracts. As growers try to sell stock, this has helped keep prices steady and lower in January.
Although the precise harvest quantity is still unknown, a market source told Expana that the 2024–2025 marketing year (MY) has seen greater availability than the 2023–2024 MY and that, contingent on demand levels, there may be some extra potatoes available near the conclusion of the season.
“The English Maris Piper EBP currently stands at GBP380/MT, up 5.5% m-o-m. Though trade has been limited, market players report challenges in sourcing the variety,” Mintec by Expana’s representative concluded.
