Northern Europe: Potato Prices Are Unchanged
While prices remain the same, the market trend is waning throughout Northern Europe due to the necessity of clearing problematic potato lots in stores. There are reportedly more breakdown problems with late-planted and late-lifted crops.
“Dry samples are firm, and some higher values were reported this week. In terms of potato seed, the market is very tight again this year, and where stocks are available, buyers on repeat orders are prioritized. Export demand from the Canaries is reported as ‘steady’ by some buyers and ‘very good’ by others”, the IFA potato experts mentioned.
As winter weather has arrived in Ireland, there has been a resurgence in the demand for and consumption of potatoes at retail stores. Because the food service industry is expanding in the run-up to Christmas, there is also a greater need for peeling fruit.
“Some pressure has come on price as harvest was timely this year, however, yields are reported to be average, especially on later planted crops,” the IFA potato experts concluded.
