National Potato Chip Day Celebrates One of America’s Favorite Snack

Potato chips are in the spotlight today, March 14, as Americans celebrate National Potato Chip Day, paying tribute to one of their favorite snacks.
According to a report from ResearchAndMarkets dating from October 2018, the US potato chip market is expected to reach USD11.31bn by 2025, exhibiting a CAGR of 4.4% during the forecast period. The expected growth highlights Americans’ devotion to the crunchy treat.
The now-famous snack was first created in the 19th century thanks to the requests of tycoon Cornelius Vanderbilt who was staying at Saratoga Springs in New York. Because he kept sending back his French fries motivating that they were too thick, chef George Crum came up with the idea to cut his spuds as thin as possible, initially at a joke.
However, the idea caught on and spread in the 1920s, when the first mass-produced chip packs first went on sale. Lay’s were among the first big-name brand to carve out a market for the snack.
Just on time for National Potato Chip Day, PrimoHoagies, a company known for its Italian specialty sandwiches, launched its first potato chips product. The snack is going to be widely available on the East Coast in supermarkets, drug stores and convenience stores.
