Spanish Province Kicks Off Potato Sowing Season

Seville potato growers started this season’s spud sowing process in the Spanish La Vega, El Aljarfe, and Las Marismas regions, with an estimated drop in production and a focus mainly on varieties for the industry.
According to local growers, cited by Agronoma, the Seville potato farmers are in an unprecedented spiral of increasing production costs.
In this respect, in line with the costs of electricity, diesel, and fertilizers, one hectare of potato cultivation is estimated to reach EUR1,300 this season.
Starting with the Christmas holidays, the planting of potatoes in the province began, a campaign that’s developing ‘in a very satisfactory way’, after the rains of Christmas week and the high temperatures recorded during the last days of 2021.
Seville province brings together more than 1,200 hectares dedicated to tuber cultivation that generates about 70,000 annual wages.
